3 NOT SO WELL KNOW FEATURES

Google Maps is more than just a GPS

Everybody knows what Google Maps can do for them. It allows you to put in your address and your destination and it’ll show you the different routes and even direct you. Simple as that! But did you know Google Maps offers more than that?

Here are our 3 favourite things that Google Maps can do for us!

1. Google Maps can keep track of you while offline, if you want.

We’re all so used to Google Maps being able to track where we’re going and offer directions, but that’s with an internet connection. The thing is, you don’t need an active internet connection (whether cellular or with wifi) for Google Maps to know your location!

To take advantage of this here’s what you do:
1. Load up Google Maps with your destination while you have an internet connection. Such as when you’re at home or in a hotel.

2. That’s it! As long as you don’t close Google Maps you can venture out and navigate yourself around by tracking the blue dot.

I found this extremely helpful when I was travelling abroad. I would use a free wifi network from a cafe or library to load up my map with my destination, and then I was able to walk and navigate to it successfully.

Don’t worry about any fees or charges about using your phone, if you’re on airplane mode while doing this, you won’t have to pay a cent.

2. Google Maps has public transport options
Google, being the super company that it is, has integrated public transport options into Google Maps.

All you need to do is put in your destination and select the “Train” icon and it’ll list what trams/trains/buses you need to catch and from where! You can even tap or click on the routes to see more exact details.

2. Find directions to anywhere
One of my pet peeves was knowing where something is but never knowing the address. Google Maps solves this problem with a two-clicks.

All you have to do is find your destination on Google Maps, right click where it is, then click ‘Directions to here’ and it’ll give you all the directions you need.
