Former maths and engineering teacher Charles Halik, 91, felt out of touch with modern technology, so he hired ReadyTechGo for smartphone tips.

“I got very glum because I realised this is a world in which I have completely fallen behind. But now I feel exhilarated: it’s like listening to two Beethoven symphonies my whole life, then discovering there are seven more.”

Mr Halik, who lives independently, loves the ease of communicating with his five children. He said using the iPad was a bit of a grind, “but I’ll get there one day”.

And his smartphone has some old-school uses.

“You can use your iPhone as a paperweight,” he joked.
