Decluttering? Sell your unwanted goods on Facebook Marketplace!

DECLUTTERING? SELL YOUR UNWANTED GOODS ON FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE!

The New Year always seems like a great excuse to declutter and get rid of unwanted and unused goods around the house.

If you’re like my mum, you might have boxes filled with your childrens books, toys and unused household goods. My mum decided to go on a decluttering spree, and was giving many of these goods away (a lot of brand new items too).

I had heard of people successfully selling goods on Facebook Marketplace, so when I visited my mum, I decided to list an item for her.

What is Facebook Marketplace?
If you are a Facebook user, Marketplace is a convenient destination on Facebook to discover, buy and sell items with people in your community.

What did I list on Facebook Marketplace?
I listed some brand new bed linen for $20, and then taught my mum how to continue listing several products including:

  • Glassware
  • Suitcases
  • Pots and Pans
  • General Household Goods

The result?
My mum was sceptical.
She’d never listed or sold anything on any type of marketplace. She was used to giving these goodies away.
Within 15 minutes, we had our first enquiry! Someone was interested in the Glassware and wanted to pick it up the next day! I showed my mum how to communicate with the potential buyer, and check their profile.
Then I left her to it….

I created a Marketplace addict!

Well… apparently my mum was up past midnight answering all her new enquiries! She tells me people love messaging at night time (probably because you’re lying down in bed scrolling through Marketplace finding goodies to buy at a bargain price!)

In the space of two weeks, my mum has sold over $500 worth of unused household goodies, and she’s wrapped!

Brad and Myself have also started listing goods on marketplace, and we have been pleasantly surprised by the speed and ease of the transactions!

As you are dealing with local community members:

  • There is no postage involved (just arrange a time and day for them to pick up)
  • They pay cash
  • No selling fees

I literally walk around my house thinking “What else can I sell???”

HOW DO I GET STARTED SELLING ON FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE:

  1. Once logged into Facebook, click on the Marketplace icon
  2. Click on +Sell Something
  3. Give your item a title (Tip: No need to be fancy, think of keywords you would use to search for that product. Eg. Queen Size Sheet Set, Brand New)
  4. Add Price, Add a Photo and give it a description (Unlike eBay, you can be very brief as buyers can ask questions)
  5. Click Post!

*You can have the option to post the item to your profile and to Buy and Sell Groups. If you don’t select these options, it will be posted in Marketplace generally

Like any online marketplaces, please always be cautious when dealing with unknown people (we usually check their Facebook Profile once they have enquired).

Next week, we will write about Buying on Facebook Marketplace and how to spot a dodgy deal.

However if you have unwanted goods around the house, the saying is very true: One mans trash is another mans treasure!!!

Let us know how you go with Facebook Marketplace!
