How To Spot The Flubot Spam

Don’t get tricked by Flubot whilst waiting for COVID updates
There has been a new scam going around known as “Flubot”, and it has been targeting thousands of Australians by sending text messages as they wait anxiously for updates on COVID tests and vaccination appointments.Flubot has been spreading via text, disguising itself as a missed call or voicemail, hoping to trick you. It is a relatively new scam as it was first reported on August 4th and has been reported hundreds of times since.

As seen from the picture above, the text message will try to get you to download a malicious app in order to obtain your banking credentials and private information.Unlike many scam calls and texts, Flubot is difficult to block but here are a few things you can do to prevent getting scammed:

1. Do not click the link and delete the text message.

2. Do not call back the individual who sent the text as they are unlikely to be the scammer. It is possible their device is not infected and their number has been spoofed.

3. If you have installed the malware, contact your bank and ensure your accounts are secure and contact an IT professional.

4. Make a report to ReportCyber if you have been a victim of this cybercrime.

The Flubot scam has already torn through Europe, with scammers keen to capitalise on the pandemic. Stay safe, ignore the messages, hit delete and whatever you do, don’t tap on the link!
