iPhones Aren’t Immune To Scams
IPHONES AREN’T IMMUNE TO SCAMS
Don’t let them trick you!
Sadly iPhones and other smartphones aren’t immune to scams and viruses, though it’s not impossible for your phone to get a virus, it’s very unlikely! This is because developing a virus for a phone is much harder than making one for a computer. The easier option for scammers and hackers is to try and trick you into thinking you have one with fake websites and messages like this one below:
What will usually happen is due to a popup or a redirection on a website, you’ll be taken to a page which will say you have a virus (when you don’t) and ask you to download their free app from the AppStore.
This app that they say is free probably does exist and is probably free which looks like a good sign, but they’re just luring you into a false sense of security!
What will happen is when you download and open the app, it’ll ask you to follow the on-screen instructions for setup which will either ask you allow the app to make purchases OR it’ll ask you to make a purchase for the ‘premium’ version on their website. That’s how they get you!
When it comes to smartphones and viruses, it’s much easier to trick somebody into thinking they have a virus instead of actually giving them a virus.
Remember, whenever you’re in doubt about a scam or virus think it through! If you’re still unsure, call a trusted source using a number you find yourself, never call the number they give you.
EXCITING WORKSHOP NEWS…
Firstly, a huge Thank You to everyone who has attended one of our weekly online workshops, now conducted remotely via Zoom. When Covid-19 first hit in March, we were worried about the impacts on the business, as ReadyTechGo is known for “Face to Face training”.
As a small business, we are nimble and able to pivot quickly to adapt to the changing environment, taking our in-home visits and group workshops all online.
We’ve been so pleased to hear how well remote one to one lessons and remote group training has gone, so Thank you for adapting with us!
On the good news front, we have secured a further grant from BeConnected (the government initiative aimed at helping Older Adults gain digital skills) to extend our workshops for another year (Thank you to everyone who takes the time to register on the BeConnected website and nominate ReadyTechGo as their Learning Centre. This shows the government that learners are attending and helps them to identify which organisations to provide grants to).
This means we can continue to provide free group training until June 2021 – YAY!!!
We understand how important it is to have digital skills, especially during this pandemic where all essential services are moving online. From October, we will be increasing our webinars to twice per week, giving you more opportunity to learn (and be entertained by Matt).
So if you have a workshop topic in mind, please email us your workshop topic requests!
October also celebrates Get Online Week. From Monday 19 October, we will be holding extra online events including an Online Trivia (with prizes to be won). So keep an eye out for upcoming newsletters with more details.
Stay well, and stay healthy!
