Cyber Slang Terms Parents & Grandparents Should Know

CYBER SLANG.

We live in a digitally driven world, one where email and texting has it’s own secret language.
Many children now have access to smartphones and tablets at an earlier age, and it’s important for parents and grandparents to understand and be across the cyber slang.

Here is a list of important cyber terms you should be aware of:

ASL stands for: Age/Sex/Location

ASLP stands for: Age/Sex/Location/Picture

CD9 stands for: Code 9 – Parents Are Around

GNOC stands for: Get Naked on Cam (webcam)

(L)MIRL stands for: (Lets) Meet In Real Life

PAW stands for: Parents are Watching

TDTM stands for: Talk Dirty To Me

WTTP stands for: Want to Trade Pics

BE CYBER SAVVY.

Children are increasingly tech savvy, so when you give children devices such as smartphones and tablets, you can enable Parental Controls.
Parental Controls allows you to set restrictions on children’s device usage. These controls are available on both Android and Apple devices.

WHAT CAN YOU RESTRICT?
On Apple devices, you can customise the Parental Controls called “restrictions“, and disable features like  iMessage, FaceTime and in-app purchases.

You can also limit the websites your child is able to visit and restrict apps in the App Store to age-appropriate apps.

BE CYBER SAFE.
On smartphones and tablets, you can also download apps to track and control online activity. Try out:
TEENSAFE – This app monitors calls, texts views phone location and view web history.
LIMITLY (FOR ANDROID) – This app blocks app usage, schedule device use, customise messages, and view stats.
